Summary
An opportunity for early to mid-career researchers – including Inuit knowledge holders and community members – from across Canada and the UK to apply for travel funds to attend the final Canada – Inuit Nunangat – United Kingdom Arctic Research Programme (CINUK) Annual Science Meeting in Ottawa, Canada. Background
The CINUK Programme 2021-2025 brings together funders from across Canada and the UK, rights holders and researchers in a unique international collaboration which includes thirteen multi-disciplinary projects. The focus of the programme is on creating high quality science, equitable partnerships, and shared governance. All research is conducted in Inuit Nunangat in collaboration with Inuit researchers and community members.
CINUK will have its final Annual Science Meeting 4 – 6 December 2024 in Ottawa, Canada. This will see UK and Canadian representatives from the thirteen projects, including Inuit researchers and community members meet to share results, identify future opportunities and to promote this inclusive approach to research. The meeting will include keynote speakers, CINUK project and poster presentations, and networking and sharing sessions.
This final meeting for the Programme will be an important step in supporting the next generation of Arctic researchers, widening the pool of knowledge, and supporting new inclusive partnerships between researchers from the UK, Canada, Inuit Nunangat and beyond.
Through access to the CINUK project teams and international funders and partners, the Next Generation UK-Canada Arctic Science Engagement Scheme will encourage important training and development opportunities for the next generation of Arctic researchers by enabling their participation in the meeting, whilst also exploring the potential for new partnerships.
The United Kingdom’s Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, working closely with the Science and Innovation Network Canada, UKRI North America and the NERC Arctic Office, is funding a travel bursaries scheme to enable travel to the final CINUK meeting in December 2024, in Ottawa.
Bursary details
These travel bursaries are open to Inuit Nunangat, Canada, and UK-based researchers from a broad range of science and knowledge fields with an interest in or connection to the work of the CINUK programme.
Applications are particularly welcome from Inuit researchers, knowledge holders and community members, early career scientists and researchers within groups under-represented across the research community.
Early Career Researchers are defined here as individuals who are within eight years of their PhD award or equivalent professional training.
Mid-Career Researchers are defined here as researchers with no more than fifteen years of academic or other research-related employment, following completion of postgraduate research training.
Applicants can apply for up to £3000 GBP ($5300 CAD) to support their travel.
Eligible costs include:
- Return travel costs to Ottawa: flights/trains/bus – economy or standard tickets only.
- Accommodation: up to four nights’ accommodation
Non eligible costs:
- Subsistence (meals etc)
- Travel and medical insurance
- Salary costs
The funds provided through this scheme are to support travel to the CINUK Annual Science Meeting only. Individuals will be responsible for booking their own travel and accommodation to the meeting and in most cases will need to submit an expense claim form (to be provided to successful applicants) to the NERC Arctic Office, with receipts to claim back costs after booking travel and accommodation. There is no registration cost to attend the meeting.
Reporting:
We will ask for a short summary highlighting your experiences from the meeting, to include any outcomes/potential collaborations, along with a feedback questionnaire.
Application and assessment process
Applications must not exceed two pages A4 (12 point text). They must be submitted electronically to the NERC Arctic Office arctic@bas.ac.uk by 1600 UK time on 30 September, preferably in PDF format or within an email.
The application must include:
- Full name
- Nationality
- Contact details (including postal address, email address and telephone number)
- Job role/employment status or position/role within the community
- Career stage (early career/mid-career), where applicable
- Reason for applying and a description of the expected outcomes/impact of attending the CINUK ASM.
- Please note any existing connections to the CINUK programme/projects where applicable and provide brief details.
- Amount applied for, with a full breakdown of expected costs.
- Where you are applying from within a research institution or similar organisation, a brief statement of endorsement/support from your supervisor/line manager or institution should be provided with the application.
The review of applications will be undertaken by a small joint UK-Canada Review Team to ensure balanced representation from across Canada and the United Kingdom.
Timescales
Applications must be submitted by 1600 (UK time) on Monday 30 September 2024. Confirmation of receipt will be via e-mail. You must contact the NERC Arctic Office – arctic@bas.ac.uk – if you do not receive confirmation of receipt.
All applicants should receive written confirmation of the outcome of their application by the middle of October 2024. Please note that no further feedback will be provided.
